Late last month, a 23-year-old New York woman was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center after sustaining multiple injuries in a two-car automobile accident. A 22-year-old man was also transported by ambulance to the Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center for injuries sustained in the accident. At the time of the news report, police investigations had yet to determine the cause of the car accident.
The collision took place just after 8 a.m. in Brookhaven, New York, where Victory Avenue intersects with Horseblock Road. The woman was driving south in a 2008 Hyundai on Victory Avenue, and the man was driving west in a 2004 Nissan on Horseblock road. They collided at the intersection.
The man was treated and later released by Brookhaven, while further information on the condition of the injured woman was not reported.
The investigation into the cause of the accident appears to be ongoing. Both of the drivers' vehicles were impounded to be checked for safety, according to the report.
Hospital bills, including bills for medical air transport, are often extremely high. Depending on the results of the police investigation, either the young man or the young woman may be faulted for the accident; it is also possible that an additional party could be found to have caused or contributed to the collision. Those injured due to the negligence of another have a legal basis to pursue a personal injury claim against that party whose negligence or recklessness caused the accident. In addition to recovering damages for injuries sustained, monetary compensation for related pain and suffering is also awarded when appropriate.
