Sometimes it is not 100 percent clear as to why an accident happened, especially if one of the drivers died in the crash. Some residents of Suffolk County may be wondering what happened after news of a two-car collision was released last week. In this car accident, one person was killed and another injured, and police are still wondering what happened.

According to Suffolk County police, an 85-year-old man was traveling north on Round Swamp Road when his Honda Accord crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic. His vehicle then hit a Mercedes Benz being driven by a 51-year-old woman. The collision left both drivers injured and both were transported to Huntington Hospital, where the man was pronounced dead. The female was listed as having non-life-threatening injuries, but the extent of those injuries was not released. Police were reported to have impounded both vehicles for safety checks and they continue to investigate the incident.

While the police conduct their investigation to see if they can determine what caused the driver to drift into oncoming traffic, it is no secret that there could be any number of reasons. Distracted driving, such as cell phone use and texting, has contributed to an increasing number of car accidents recently. It is also possible that a part of the car malfunctioned while the man was driving.

The woman involved in this accident, who is left with physical and possibly emotional trauma, will benefit from police findings as to what or who was at fault if she chooses to seek compensation in civil court.
