When a person is killed in a car accident in New York or anywhere in the United States, police work to investigate the scene of the crash in order to understand who was at fault and how the accident happened. Unfortunately, in some situations one or more of the persons involved in the crash leaves the scene, making accident reconstruction that much more difficult for authorities. It also leaves the victims of the crash with unanswered questions.

A recent news story detailed a crash that killed a construction worker on Long Island. According to police, two men were loading a milling machine onto a trailer on the side of the road in the early morning hours on a Friday in October. That is when a dark-colored sports utility vehicle struck and killed one of them. The 49-year-old construction worker was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say after the crash, the SUV left the scene. The second construction worker was not injured. The accident happened on Route 25-A in Fort Salonga.

No further information was released about the man killed in the accident. Police continue to investigate the hit-and-run crash in hopes of locating the driver of the SUV. If the suspect is located, he or she may face criminal charges as a result of the death of the construction worker.

In this case, the family of the deceased man is entitled to seek compensation. If the driver's actions are found to be negligent, the family may be able to obtain damages for funeral expenses, loss of future earnings, and pain and suffering.
