Earlier this month, a Staten Island ferry that had already been involved in numerous accidents crashed into a pier. It was reported that as many as 37 people were injured, after passengers were thrown to the deck.
What is unfortunate about this Staten Island ferry accident is that it is not the first major wreck for this vessel known as the Andrew J Barberi. In 2003, the ferry was involved in a deadly crash that claimed the lives of eleven people.
The most recent accident for this ferry occurred when it malfunctioned during its approach to the terminal. Apparently, the Andrew J Barberi's throttle wouldn't engage as it prepared to dock. The ferry, which weighs approximately 3,000 tons and is 310 feet long, was going about 5.8 miles per hour when it hit the dock.
At the time of the collision, the Andrew J Barberi was transporting 252 passengers and 18 members of the crew. Fire Department spokesman James Long stated that 37 passengers were treated for injuries and 35 of them were taken to hospitals. Long also said that none of the passengers appeared to have life-threatening injuries. All but one of the passengers was released from the hospital.
