When was the last time you walked across a New York street based on the crosswalk signal? What would happen if the crosswalk sign malfunctioned? You might be stranded on a corner wondering whether it was safe to cross or not. That is exactly what Upper West Side residents have experienced.
One resident, 81-year-old Brigitta Ortner, has compiled a list of known intersections where malfunctioning crosswalk signs may have played a role in New York pedestrian accidents. All of these incidents occurred along Columbus Avenue and include the intersections at 64th, 70th, 77th and 81st streets.
Unbelievably, Ornter indicated that at least four pedestrian accidents occurred at the corner of 81st Street in 2009. She even reported that at one time she observed all four crosswalk signs working improperly.
As you can imagine, malfunctioning crosswalk signs can pose serious dangers. Fortunately, it has been reported that the department of transportation recently fixed these signs.
