The news spread rapidly earlier this week, as Toyota Motor Corp. announced that it would be temporarily stopping production and halting the sales of many of its top models. Toyota, which is the world's biggest auto manufacturer, made this announcement following millions of recalls within the past two months.

The recalls came about after there were numerous reports of problems with the gas pedals. This defect could cause the vehicle to slow down or speed up unintentionally.

The halt of production and sales was a bold move by Toyota. Toyota Group Vice President Bob Carter said, "helping ensure the safety of our customers and restoring confidence in Toyota are very important to our company. This action is necessary until a remedy is finalized. We're making every effort to address this situation for our customers as quickly as possible."

The vehicles that are impacted by this major auto defect include the 2009-2010 RAV4, Corolla and Matrix models and 2007-2010 Camry sedans. Sales will also be suspended for some Highlander, Tundra, Avalon and Sequoia models.
