Insurance companies are preying on people who are already facing financial hardships by using tough tactics to increase profits, according to the American Association of Justice (AAJ).
The report by the AAJ mentioned that insurers are playing hardball during people's greatest time of need. Insurance companies are believed to be using tactics that are making it difficult for policyholders to obtain compensation for their claims, but also for people who are trying to keep their policies or get approved for new coverage.
The AAJ identified some of the insurance company tactics as the following:
- Denying claims
- Delaying claims
- Using confusing contracts
- Basing decisions on credit scores
- Abandoning sick policyholders
- Dropping coverage for a mere phone call
It was alluded that the more that insurers are able to avoid having to pay claims, the higher their profits. Insurers therefore commonly employ tactics that increase their bottom lines, even at the expense of policyholders.
